PR 12 - Caminho Real da Encumeada

This historic 12.2 km 'Royal Path' was created by royal order in the mid-1800s and remains paved with original stones, following elevations between 940-1,340 meters near Madeira's highest peaks. Starting at Boca da Corrida belvedere, the 4-5 hour moderate-hard trail traces the old route used by nobility and landed gentry to traverse the island, offering constant evidence of historical significance. Hikers cross mountain water courses and experience the deep green Laurissilva forest while enjoying proximity to Pico Ruivo and Pico do Areeiro. Currently passable from Boca da Corrida to kilometer 3.5, this trail beautifully preserves Madeira's aristocratic heritage within nature.
