Every time we stand at the entrance of a supermarket with a donation trolley, we know that not everyone will stop. Some people smile, others politely decline, and many simply walk past. But every now and then, someone picks up an extra packet of pasta, a bag of rice, or a tin of tuna and quietly places it into the trolley.
To them, it may feel like a small gesture. To a family in need, it can mean everything.
This weekend, Madeira Friends once again joined forces with CASA Madeira for another food collection campaign. Thanks to the incredible work CASA carries out throughout the year, 296 families and 675 individuals will receive food baskets filled with essential items.
Behind these numbers are real people with families struggling with the rising cost of living and the ongoing housing crisis. As CASA'S Regional Coordinator, Silvia Ferreira, recently wrote, "Behind every statistic is a person who deserves dignity." That simple sentence perfectly captures why these collections matter. What made this weekend especially meaningful was the people standing alongside us.
Our volunteers came from all walks of life. We had locals, internationals, children, and people volunteering for the very first time. Some didn't speak Portuguese, but that didn't stop them from smiling, greeting shoppers, and encouraging donations. Kindness doesn't require a common language.
Madeira has become home to people from all over the world, and we're proud to see so many newcomers wanting to give back to the island that has welcomed them. At the same time, it's important that we never lose sight of the local families who need our support. Building a stronger community means caring for everyone who calls Madeira home.
The reality is that organisations like CASA depend not only on food donations but also on volunteers. As Silvia Ferreira highlighted, without volunteers there are no food collections, and without food collections there is no food to distribute. It is a simple but powerful reminder that every hour given and every conversation with a shopper helps keep this support going.
