The Madeira Friends community had the privilege of taking part in something truly special.

For the first time, we joined APCM – Associação de Paralisia Cerebral da Madeira, as volunteers at their annual Ceia dos Santos Populares, an evening that brought together more than 400 local guests, over 80 volunteers, live music, fundraising activities, handmade crafts, and a huge amount of community spirit.

What we expected to be a volunteer shift quickly became much more than that.

An Evening Built on Community

From the moment we arrived, there was a buzz of activity. Volunteers were preparing tables, carrying supplies, welcoming guests, and making sure everything was ready for the hundreds of people expected throughout the evening. As guests began to arrive, the terrace quickly filled with laughter, conversations, music, and familiar faces from across Madeira.

Many of our Madeira Friends volunteers had never participated in a charity dinner before. Some were volunteering for the first time. Others were navigating language barriers while helping local guests throughout the evening.

But what stood out most was how naturally everyone came together.

Locals and internationals worked side by side. Strangers became teammates. Small acts of kindness happened constantly throughout the evening.

More Than Food on a Table

While guests enjoyed a wonderful dinner, live entertainment, fundraising auctions, and stalls selling beautiful handmade items created by APCM members and patients, it was impossible not to notice the deeper purpose behind the event.

Every ticket purchased, every auction bid, every handmade item sold, and every volunteer hour contributed directly towards supporting APCM and the incredible work they do for people with cerebral palsy and their families across Madeira. Seeing this first-hand was inspiring. Behind every plate served was a volunteer. Behind every smiling guest was a team working tirelessly behind the scenes. Behind every donation was someone choosing to support a cause bigger than themselves.

The Volunteers Who Made It Happen

One of the things we love most about Madeira Friends is seeing people discover new ways to connect with the island. Many people arrive in Madeira looking for sunshine, nature, and a better quality of life. What often surprises them is how rewarding it can be to give something back.

Throughout the evening, our volunteers represented the community beautifully. They greeted guests, served food, helped wherever needed, and brought enthusiasm, kindness, and positivity to every task.

We were especially touched by the feedback we received throughout the night. Several guests recognised Madeira Friends and spoke about the positive impact the community continues to have across the island.

But the real credit belongs to the volunteers themselves.

To Eleanor, Attila, Stathis, Álvaro, and everyone else who joined us, thank you.

You gave your time, your energy, and your hearts.

A Special Thank You

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to APCM for welcoming us so warmly and allowing us to be part of this wonderful event.

Thank you also to the PortoBay team, whose organisation, hospitality, and support helped make the evening such a success. They were an important part of making this connection happen.

Most importantly, thank you to every volunteer, organiser, performer, donor, guest, and supporter who contributed to the event.

Looking Ahead

This was our first APCM Charity Dinner. We sincerely hope it will not be our last.

As the evening came to a close and the final tables were cleared, there was a shared feeling among our volunteers that they had experienced something special.

Not because of the number of guests.

Not because of the food.

Not because of the entertainment.

But because they had spent an evening helping others and contributing to a cause that genuinely changes lives.

APCM often shares a quote by Winston Churchill that perfectly captures the spirit of the evening:

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."

Living in Madeira is wonderful.

But helping the island, supporting its people, and becoming part of its community is even better. ❤️
